Fábrica de San Pedro Cultural Center

Since 2017, an important part of the Foundation’s efforts have been directed towards the creation of a cultural center in the Former Thread and Textile Factory of San Pedro, located in Uruapan, Michoacan. To this end, the Foundation, together with the Terreno Baldio Arte gallery and professionals from the artistic and cultural sphere, has coordinated an initial program that includes renovation work for the adaptation of a large exhibition gallery, a shop displaying products related to the current exhibition, a photographic record of the renovation process, and research on the history of textile production in Uruapan.

Between 2017 and 2020 we have carried out a series of art exhibitions, workshops and activities for a general audience, attracting the interest of over 36,000 visitors. Approximately 40% of this public is made up of children and young people.

Our main objective in this project is to establish a cultural center that functions as a laboratory for the convergence and collaboration between contemporary and traditional cultures in areas such as design, art and gastronomy, in the Former Thread and Textile Factory of San Pedro, a municipal public space. The purpose of this project is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in the community, through the recuperation of its social fabric in collective and public terms. This initiative also aims to strengthen the cultural identity of the population of Uruapan and its surroundings, projecting its image on a national and international level.

Currently, the Javier Marin Foundation is working together with the Uruapan City Council and the Mauricio Rocha Architectural Studio (Taller de Arquitectura) to plan the architectural adaptation of the Former Thread and Textile Factory of San Pedro in order to convert it into a cultural center with a “Residency and workshop program for collaborative practices: creative residencies and encounters with artisans”. The first section of the facility is expected to open in the Summer of 2021.
